How to Start Business Networking, Online and Face-to-Face
We can’t stress how important networking is for you and your business. Not only will it develop areas of your business you haven’t even dreamed about but it will help your personal growth no end.
Here’s our tips on how to start business networking, whether you choose to network in person or online the results are incredible.
Benefits of Networking
You’ve probably heard us talk about the benefits of networking on previous occasions (see our blog (The Power of Networking) but it’s so important that it’s worth mentioning it again. Networking opens up countless opportunities that you might not come across otherwise. Business owners are fantastic people and they’re always keen to help a fellow business owner who is starting out or on a similar path to their own. They’ll happily share their knowledge if they think it will help because at some point, someone has done the same for them and it’s made a world of difference.
Building those lasting relationships will stand you in good stead for when the going gets tough, having someone to turn to who really understands can be a great comfort and support.
Ultimately you want more business from your networking efforts, this will come in time but you have to be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day and networking isn’t an instant fix, it takes time to establish the level of trust whereby others recommend you. Collaboration opportunities are a great way to start building those relationships. Look for ways you can partner up with someone, either in the same industry or a different sector. It might be that you can work on a large project together if you’re in the same field, opening you both up to bigger clients that you couldn’t manage alone. Combining your skills with someone in a different sector is a great way to offer a better deal for your respective clients. The possibilities are truly endless.
Online Networking Strategies
Explore the online networking platforms out there. I don’t just mean online Zoom or Teams meetings, think LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc and industry-specific forums that you can be part of.
Make sure your profile on these platforms is up to date, with a great headshot that shows you as friendly and approachable. Highlight what you can offer and what results you have achieved for your client. Focus on what’s in it for them, it’s not about you.
There are various online networking events out there, some regional, others national. Think about your target audience, if you’re a window cleaner in Wigan, there’s not much point in attending national events. However, if you provide your services nationwide, or you’re looking to expand into a global market, don't just settle for local events. Here’s some more tips for online networking.
Face-to-Face Networking Techniques
Now, we know that online networking is super convenient, it saves time and money but there’s something special about meeting someone in person. Some people say that you build better relationships this way, although I’m still on the fence about this. We've met some brilliant business owners through our online networking and have great relationships with them. I guess it’s personal preference.
When you attend an in-person event, be open to talking to others, after all, that’s what you are there for. Don’t be shy, approach individuals rather than large groups, it’s easier that way. Everyone there is looking to talk to someone new.
Prepare for the event beforehand by thinking about your Elevator Pitch. Don’t learn it word for word but have an idea of how you can explain your business in a succinct and understandable way. Although at some events you are asked to give your 60-second pitch, so it’s better to be prepared. Take your business cards or at least have a way for people to connect with you through LinkedIn or a digital business card. Here’s some more tips for attending a face-to-face event.
Follow-Up and Nurturing Connections
It’s not over when the event ends, that’s just the beginning! Following up is paramount. Start by connecting on the socials and dropping them a message to say how great it was to meet them. You can also keep up to date with any developments in their business so that when you meet again you have something to ask them about. Maintaining the relationship can be a bit more effort. Arrange a coffee from time to time, or drop them an email if you think there is room for collaboration.
Conclusion
So, the benefits of networking far outweigh the challenges, whether you attend online or face to face events. It’s about building those relationships, looking for opportunities for yourself and others and being willing to share knowledge and information.
Online networking can feel a little less pressured to begin with. They aren’t as time-consuming or costly if your budget is tight. Face-to-face events can be more daunting so start at small events where you feel comfortable then push out of your comfort zone when you are ready.
Don’t forget to follow up, it’s the most important part. Remember, networking is about building meaningful relationships, so approach it with curiosity and a willingness to learn.
And, get out there, you just never know who you will meet and what opportunities are waiting around the corner.
